Children's Mental Health Matters! Download a Children's Mental Health Awareness Week Calendar - .pdf May 5, 2005 For more than 50 years, May has been designated as National Mental Health Month to raise awareness of mental health disorders and treatment. It is only in the last three years that there has been a special time set aside in May to observe Children’s Mental Health Awareness. This year, Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week is May 5–11, with May 8 marked as Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. You can show your support for children’s mental health by joining the thousands of people across the country who will be “wearing the green”—ribbons and plastic bracelets, that is. Much like the pink ribbons used for breast cancer awareness, green ribbons have been adopted to raise awareness of children’s mental health. The ribbons and bracelets carry the very important message Children’s Mental Health Matters! Why green? To combat stigma! The color green was used in the 1800s to brand those people labeled “insane.” The children’s mental health community decided to derail the stigma by claiming green—as a color that signifies new life, growth and new beginnings. If you’d like a ribbon or bracelet to raise public awareness, better the lives of children with serious emotional disorders and show support for these children and their families, contact the Coalition at 410.730.8267 or e-mail info@mdcoalition.org. There are resources throughout the state to help you find the best path for your child, starting with the Maryland Coalition of Families for Children's Mental Health.
